Regular Services at St Laurence's

We try to provide services which will suit the many different types of people who make up our Parish Community.

Sunday 8.00am

Each Sunday we have a traditional service of Holy Communion following the Book of Common Prayer. We hold this service in the Lady Chapel which is the oldest part of our premises. It was in existence over 800 years ago, and ever since 1662 this traditional service has been celebrated here each week. If you like tradition, and if you like the grand language of Cranmer then this is the service for you. There is no music, but there is a short sermon each week.

Sunday Eucharist 10.00am

10.00am service is a celebration of the Holy Eucharist. It follows the modern rite of Common Worship. It includes processions, acolytes, music and a sermon. The language is modern (i.e. no thee’s and thou’s). There is full involvement of the laity who read the lessons, lead us in the intercessions and present the offerings.

The music can vary, sometimes being led by the choir and at other times by the music group. This is a service that the whole family can attend, although the children leave for their Sunday School Lessons for the first part of the service.

Sunday All Age Worship   10.00am

The third Sunday of the month has either an All Age Eucharist. Children are present in good numbers, our Uniformed Organisations parade their flags into Church, and badges and certificates are presented. Very often the children will have prepared an item to enlightened the adult congregation. This is very often a fun service and, is a well attended and happy service.

Sunday Service of the Word  3.00pm

On the second Sunday of the month we hold an afternoon service instead of an evening one. At this service children are often received in Holy Baptism with parents coming for their candle on the third Sunday at 10.00am. It is a relaxed service - could it be any other with so many children in attendance? We use the Saxon font, used on this site for probably over 1,000 years.

Sunday Evening Service  6.00pm

There is a service each Sunday evening  except the 1st Sunday revolves around the C of E town Churches. The style of the evening service varies week by week.  On the first Sunday it is a traditional Prayer Book Service of Evensong sung by the combined choirs of four churches. It includes sung Psalms and there is normally a choir anthem.   The second and third Sundays is a 'informal Eucharist' this is a short Eucharist lasting about 25min with no singing.  The fourth service is a praise service.  If you like a lively service with guitar music then this is the service for you.
